Nostalgia Train
This series explores my hyper sexualized existence as a preteen growing up in the 90s. The baby girl fetishization that was under the surface of every single print ad, toy, and even food on the market at the time. I was confronted with my place in the world at this time in all of its awkward glory. The subject of our bodies, sexuality and femininity always being a topic of discussion. Using the colors and imagery of the time period I narrate the absurdity and fragility of a female childhood.
There are many shared similarities between the euphemisms I employ and the descriptions of the objects we played with and the foods consumed in my childhood. It's a time of cuteness and confusion. The constant borrowing from other eras, it becomes a cyclical machine of imagery. Exploring targeted ad campaigns from various decades, I was able to explore fabricated tropes that developed regarding gender identity and the expectations of female adolescence.
